Following a defeat by defending champion Xiao Guodong, English teenager Stan Moody’s unexpected run in the Wuhan Open ended in the quarter-finals.

Moody, a Halifax native, defeated Barry Hawkins and Ding Junhui to reach the top three of his maiden ranking.

The 18-year-old, who is ranked 61st in the world, was able to hold back the 2024 champion, who came away with a comfortable 5-2 victory.

In the final four, Xiao will face Mark Williams, who defeated Zhang Anda 5-1.

Williams will make his 68th appearance in a ranking match, and the 50-year-old claims to “pinch myself occasionally” as he continues to compete in the business end of tournaments despite being “20 years past” his peak.
