Marcus Mumford has spoken about the time Taylor Swift stayed in his home as a guest, describing her as “phenomenal”. The frontman of Mumford & Sons said the singer from Pennsylvania stayed in his home after he was approached by Aaron Dessner, a collaborator with Swift.

Dessner said he was looking for a discreet recording space in the UK, with Mumford joking the mystery artist it was for was “Beyonce or something”. Little did he know the 14-time Grammy Award winner would be staying in his home a short time later.

Swift recorded parts of her album, Evermore, in the recording space and even featured on a track called Cowboy Like Me.

Speaking Jessie Ware’s podcast, Table Manners, Mumford said: “She was the most phenomenal house guest and she brought a killer candle, her candle game was excellent, and she finished the second half of Evermore in our studio. Then she asked me to sing on one (track), and I said, ‘yes’.”

Taylor also spoke about this interaction while on tour, stating she felt giddy at the thought of asking Marcus to feature on a song with her.

She told an audience in Las Vegas: “He calls me up and he’s like I have really really good news. Marcus Mumford said that you could record at his home studio.

“First of all I’m so excited that he’s saving us because without this trip we wouldn’t have recorded five of six of the songs on Evermore. [They] came from me getting in a car and driving six hours out into country past thousands of beautiful sheep to Marcus Mumford’s beautiful house where he has a studio.

“I got there and the whole time I’m thinking, oh wouldn’t it be so cool if he would sing on something because I’m such a Mumford & Sons fan and I just think he is brilliant and has one of the most gorgeous voices in the world.

“But I didn’t want to be weird about it, so I was like I wonder if he will wonder in, fate will have him wonder into the studio. So sure enough we’re recording a song and he wonders in at the perfect time and just starts humming a perfect harmony.

“And I sort of turned to him like I hadn’t been thinking about it the whole time and said ‘oh, you sounds really good on that harmony I wonder if maybe you might sing on this song’. And he was like ‘yep, would love to’.”
