Vitor Matos’ current club Maritimo has confirmed his departure, and Swansea City are close to appointing him as their new head coach.

After failing to sign Kim Hellberg, who is set to take over at Middlesbrough, they made Matos, a former Liverpool elite development coach, the club’s top target.

Since taking over at Portuguese second-tier club Maritimo in June, Matos, 37, has only been in charge.

However, Swansea have decided Matos is the best choice to succeed Alan Sheehan, who was fired last week because they didn’t nominate Hellberg.

Following the club’s Friday release clause, which was activated on Friday, Coach Vitor Matos will depart from CS Martimo to take over Swansea City, according to Maritimo in a statement on Instagram.

The Green and Red Club expresses its sincere gratitude to him for his professionalism, commitment, and contribution to Martimo.

“We wish Vitor Matos the best of both his personal and professional success in the future.”

Matos, a native of Portugal, previously worked for Porto before joining Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool staff in 2019.

Before leaving the Merseyside giants in 2024 along with Klopp and assistant manager Pep Lijnders, he spent five years at Anfield.

Matos, who spent the summer training for his professional license at Maritimo, signed a two-year contract with Maritimo.

After almost four decades at the highest level, Maritimo finished 12th last year, but they are currently third after winning six of their 11 league games under Matos.

Russell Martin, the former head coach, is not one of the potential bosses Swansea spoke to since Sheehan’s departure.
