Granit Xhaka, a Sunderland target, will not be able to leave Bayer Leverkusen this summer, according to head coach Erik ten Hag.

The 32-year-old former Arsenal midfielder’s agent confirmed to German media that he wanted to return to England and had agreed personal terms with the newly promoted Premier League club.

The Bundesliga team does not want to lose any more players, however, after selling Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, and Jonathan Tah to Bayern Munich.

The agent has complete authority. However, three significant players have already been let go by this club,” Ten Hag said.

Granit has signed a five-year contract with us, and he has three more years to go. “It’s obvious. We must let him go because he is too significant.

Before joining Leverkusen in 2023, the Swiss international spent seven years playing for Arsenal in the Premier League.

Under Xabi Alonso in his debut season, Leverkusen also lost the Europa League final to Atalanta, earning them the Bundesliga title and the German Cup double.

According to his five-year contract, Xhaka has three years to go.
