After choking a few minutes before the live Blackpool show, Shirley Ballas of Strictly Come Dancing said she “almost didn’t make it.”
Before the show’s host, the famed Blackpool Tower, began, Shirley, 65, was struggling to breathe as she recalled the “terrifying” moment to fans. Without Jane, the hairstylist, who had to perform the Heimlich maneuver, the panel would have been a “judge down,” the head judge claimed.
She said, “I choked on a fishbone,” in a video to her followers. My wonderful Jane, who has been with me for nine years, performed the Heimlich maneuver and we extracted the bone. It became lodged in my throat. But it was terrifying there for 20 minutes because it was lodged and I couldn’t breathe.
If it weren’t for her, Shirley, who is from Wirral, added in a video to her Instagram account, “We’d have been a judge down tonight.” She repeatedly told her fans about how she was, saying, “I’m a little hoarse, but everything is good.”

In case she needs to use the Heimlich maneuver in the future, the judge has now pledged to learn it.
An object that might be lodged in a person’s airways is dislodged using abdominal thrusts. In case I ever come across anyone who needs my assistance, Shirley continued, “I’m going to study now.”
It comes after Shirley discovered lumpy tissue in her left breast, which she had previously battled for several health issues. After three biopsies and a mammogram, she was given the final approval, but Shirley claimed she was concerned that she had “worked myself to death.”
Before the biopsy, she told The Sun, “It’s been terrifying to have the needle go in your body. I’m very emotional. I’m teaching because I’m not the same at work right now, but it’s always on my mind.

The Strictly actress revealed her diagnosis of degenerative spine disease and what treatment options she has for her.
It involves three different types of operations, she told The Sun. And since I’m doing anti-inflammatory, I don’t want to have the operations. I’m attempting to practice ice bathing and juicing. Yes, I do have an ice bath made of brass. I’ve already climbed to about four minutes because it’s freezing cold at five in the morning.
I would say that it really motivates me to get my day started, and that I have also reduced my work hours because I don’t want any operations as long as I don’t feel any.
