The former Strictly finalist revealed details of the ‘shocking and scary’ moment he was hit by a car and left by the side of the road – and why doctors suspect he escaped death
Everything you need to know about John Whaite’s horror accident…
- John Whaite, a finalist in the 2021 series of the hit BBC dance show, shared shocking details of the moment he was hit by a car, causing him to “roll up the bonnet” before “splatting” down onto the tarmac.
- The former Great British Bake off winner said he was initially saved by a passing good Samaritan who he called an “angel of a human” and who covered him with his coat on the roadside and waited for the police and ambulance crew to arrive.
- The professional baker, who was paired with Johannes Radebe in Strictly’s first ever male same-sex couple, was later told by doctors the accident could have been fatal had he not been “16 stone of muscle”.
- He said: “Last night I got run over (seriously). I rolled up the bonnet damaging it and the windscreen, before splatting onto the road and crawling to the pavement where some angel of a human threw his coat around me and waited with me for an ambulance.”
- After initially saying the driver was “speeding without looking” in his Instagram statement, John, who lives in Leeds, later wrote: “I don’t know what speed the driver was going. But it was enough to skittle me up onto his windscreen and down onto the floor”.
- He also issued a stern warning about not wearing black while crossing a road in the dark, and thanked his local NHS and police force to taking care of him, adding “how lucky we are to have these angel creatures roaming the earth, by our sides”.
