Lutz Pfannenstiel once stole a penguin, spent 101 days in a Singapore jail on suspicion of match-fixing, modeled for Armani, and was appointed Aberdeen’s sporting director.

After turning down a contract with Bayern Munich at the age of 19 to travel the world, the 52-year-old German was known as the “global goalie” after a successful playing career that included 25 clubs in 13 nations. He became the first professional to represent all six of Fifa’s confederations.

He joins Aberdeen at a time when Jimmy Thelin, the team’s manager, is under pressure after a season with just three victories in 15 games.

Chairman Dave Cormack wants to draw on Pfannenstiel’s “extensive coaching, scouting, young player development and leadership expertise gained across various roles and cultures.”

He stated on Aberdeen’s website that “in particular, his technical knowledge, academy development experience, and global recruitment network were key factors in the board’s choice for this crucial role.”

Starting on November 10, Pfannenstiel, who will be in charge of all football and performance areas, is looking forward to joining a club with “rich tradition, a storied history, and a true football soul.”

He claimed that he will inherit a very strong team and infrastructure from the club after spending time getting to know the club over the past two years.

The Scottish Premiership team will have Pfannenstiel present a vibrant CV.
