In the final Ashes Test against Australia in Sydney, captain Ben Stokes warned his England players not to be protective of their positions.
The Ashes defeats frequently signal changes in the England team because Stokes’ men have already lost the series.
England will announce their team at the toss for the fifth Test on Sunday (23:30 GMT Saturday) instead of making a final decision in advance for the match at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).
According to Stokes, “There shouldn’t be any reason for anyone to get private or secret about what they want to do this week.”
“It becomes quite clear as soon as someone begins to consider their own performances.”
I’ve learned from everyone in this group that everything you say, do, and say is always about the team’s goals, not your own.
Whoever appears this week will decide what the team needs in every way that they do and make.
For the fifth Test, England announced a 12-man squad for Friday. In place of the injured Gus Atkinson, a younger Matthew Potts appears to be set to make his Ashes debut, leaving Shoaib Bashir and Will Jacks to make up the lineup.
Bashir started the tour as the first-choice spinner for England, but the all-rounder Jacks have since been overlooked. The extent of their belief that spin will play would appear to determine England’s decision.
Although the ground has recently lost its reputation, the SCG has historically assisted spinners. Only nine wickets have been tallied in the Ashes series.
Australia have also chosen not to name their team, with speculation rifling over the Sydney surface following England’s victory in the fourth Test in Melbourne in two days due to the grassy surface.
By Saturday, the SCG pitch had lost the green it had earlier in the week. The first day of Sunday’s test is anticipated to be shortened by rain, which could lessen the impact spin might have.
It’s a challenging one, according to Stokes. A groundsman has never been under as much pressure as this week, in my opinion.
When we slam the pitch, rub it, and knock it, we try to act like we know what we’re doing. No one really understands.
“You can only try to get the best chance to get the XI necessary to have a winning chance.

England’s first three Test defeats came at a terrible loss, leaving them with the series at the earliest opportunity.
However, the tourists’ fourth Test victory in Melbourne marked their first for almost 15 years.
Despite this Ashes defeat, Stokes, head coach Brendon McCullum, and cricket director Rob Key have all stated that they want to stay in their jobs.
If England loses at the SCG, McCullum and Key’s positions would be subject to more scrutiny if Stokes were to remain.
Former England captain Michael Vaughan has previously claimed that their epic series victory in 2005 came with their victory in Sydney following a 4-1 defeat by the Ashes in 2002-2003.
Unfortunately, The Ashes for us hasn’t turned out the way we anticipated, but we have one more game in a sizable series, Stokes said.
England’s upcoming three-match series against New Zealand will begin in June with the opening test.
England has 14 matches until the next Ashes series at home in the summer of 2027, including the Test in Sydney.
Stokes, however, does not believe that this game will provide a springboard for the urn’s recovery the following year.
The 34-year-old said, “That’s so far away from where we are right now.” There is a significant gap until our next series and a significant test to play. All that is left is reflection. That is not the moment to do that.
The Jane McGrath Foundation, a charity established in honor of the late wife of legendary Australian pace bowler Glenn McGrath, will have a pink theme for the fifth Test, which has become a tradition in Sydney.
Usman Khawaja, an Australian batter, announced on Friday that this will be his final international game and that this will be his final test.
Steve Smith, a 36-year-old stand-in Australia captain, has stated that he will not be following him into retirement at the time of his retirement.
Australia’s final test is scheduled for August, which begins a busy schedule leading up to the 2027 Ashes, before a home series against Bangladesh in August.
Smith has not yet indicated whether he intends to travel to England, where they have won no series since 2001.
