Spurs captain Romero signs new four-year contract

Cristian Romero, the captain of Tottenham Hotspur, has agreed to renew his four-year contract.

The Argentina centre-back, 27, signed for Spurs from Atalanta in August 2021, initially on loan before being made permanent the following summer.

In the Europa League final between Tottenham and Manchester United, he led the team in eight goals and made 126 appearances for the club.

Romero was named club captain by new head coach Thomas Frank after being heavily linked with a summer move to Atletico Madrid. Under the terms of the contract, Romero will remain there until 2029.

Romero, who helped Spurs win the Europa League in the previous campaign, said he was “very happy” with the team and that he anticipated a “special season” for the team.

Romero was referred to as a player who “sets the standards” both on and off the pitch, according to Frank’s statement last week.

Following right-back Djed Spence, the former Belgrano defender has signed a new long-term contract. He had two more years on his previous deal.

Spence, 25, moved to Middlesbrough in 2022, but had to make up for his difficult start to his Spurs career and spent time on loan at Rennes, Leeds, and Genoa.

He made 42 appearances for former boss Ange Postecoglou, scoring twice, and made an important contribution to his former side last season.
