Six people dead after tourist submarine sinks off Egypt’s coast

According to local authorities, a tourist submarine sank off Hurghada, a well-known Egyptian Red Sea destination, killing at least six people.

The submarine sank off a beach in the tourist promenade area on Thursday, according to Egypt’s Red Sea governorate, which confirmed the deaths of six Russians and the rescue of 39 foreigners.

In the wake of the rescue effort, it was stated that there were no missing persons.

When the submarine went down, 45 tourists and five Egyptians were aboard, according to Red Sea governor Amr Hanafi, who stated in a statement that rescue teams were dispatched right away.

When the submarine “crashed 1 kilometer from the shore” at around 10 a.m. local time (08:00 GMT), the Russian consulate in Hurghada confirmed that it was carrying “45 tourists” in addition to its crew.

The consulate stated that “the majority of those on board were rescued and transported to their hotels and hospitals in Hurghada.”

The submarine’s sinking was not immediately understood, but it was reported that the weather was clear on Thursday and that underwater visibility was at its best.

According to Egypt’s Akhbar Al-Youm newspaper, investigations into the incident’s origins are ongoing.

According to the website of Sindbad Submarines, the submarine was equipped with large portholes to allow passengers to view the stunning corals and marine life in the Red Sea.

Hurghada, which is located about 460 kilometers (280 miles) southeast of Cairo, is a major tourist destination for Russians who visit Egypt.

In recent years, there have been several fatal accidents in the area.

Four people were killed and seven were missing when a dive boat capsized off the coast of Marsa Alam, south of Hurghada, in November.

Before their boat went down in June, a dozen French tourists were safely evacuated after the storm damaged their boat.

Three British tourists died in 2023 when their yacht caught fire and went engulfed in flames.
