After receiving 16 Academy Award nominations, Sinners has broken records. Michael B. Jordan portrays the Smokestackt twins in the horror movie, which was directed by Ryan Coogler, and follows the pair as they navigate racism in 1930s Mississippi.
Wunmi Mosaku won the award for Best Supporting Actress, while Delroy Lindo received the best nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Leading Actor, and Best Supporting Actor. The film is also up for the first-ever casting prize, an Oscar for best original score, Best original screenplay, Best film editing, and Best production design. Additionally, costume designer Ruth E. Carter has been nominated for her work on the project.
Best Sound, Best Production Design, Best Visual Effects, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, and Best Original Song for Miles Caton’s rendition of I Lied To You complete the awards the movie has received.
The record surpasses the previous 14 nominations, which included the 2016 musical La La Land and James Cameron’s 1997 epic romance drama Titanic. However, it is in competition with Train Dreams, Frankenstein, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, One Battle After Another, The Secret Agent, Sentimental Value, and Bugonia F1, for Best Picture.
Mosaku must defeat Emma Stone for Bugonia, Rose Byrne for If I Had Legs, Rose Byrne for If I Had Legs, and Jessie Buckley for Hamnet’s Rose Byrne for Best Actress. In addition, Wagner Moura and Timothée Chalamet square off against Leonardo DiCaprio and One Battle After Another, Ethan Hawke and Timothée Chalamet for Marty Supreme, respectively.
Sinners was nominated seven times at the recent Golden Globes, which are typically used as a prelude to Oscars, but it only won in the categories of Best Original Score and Cinematic.
It has received rave reviews from critics thanks to its stellar 99 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which it has received since it first appeared in theaters last year.
The movie received four stars from Empire, who stated, “Some characters feel underserved by the time we reach the final rush of blood, teeth, and fire, and it’s a lot to chew on – literally, in the end.” However, it’s difficult to expect such a wildly original, defiantly weird, and gorgeously made movie to adhere to a rulebook.
An oddly fast-paced but beautifully played, thematically dense twist on the vampire myth. one that will give you a bad rap. “Screen Rant praised Sinners,” calling it “exquisite” and “one of the best movies of the year.”
In this day and age of Hollywood, their review glowed with admiration: “The existence of writer-director Ryan Coogler’s Sinners feels like a miracle. I’m optimistic about the direction of filmmaking because it is so amazingly good and densely layered.
“Coogler’s most recent film is already one of my favorite of the year and should be regarded as one of the best of 2025,” Coogler said in the end.
“I was taken to another place watching Sinners, and I have no doubt that audiences will leave feeling moved and simultaneously entertained by this gripping, multifaceted story that should be viewed on the biggest screen possible and, ideally, more than once.”
