Umberto Ferrara, the former partner of Jannik Sinner’s divorce after the investigation into his positive tests for a banned substance, has been re-appointed as his fitness coach.
Five months after Ferrara returned two positive clostebol tests, Giacomo Naldi and physiotherapist Giacomo Naldi left the Italian national team in August 2024.
In a statement from Sinner’s team, it is stated that “Umberto has played an important role in Jannik’s development to date, and his return reflects a renewed focus on continuity and performance at the highest level.”
The World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) appealed the panel’s decision, saying that the former Wimbledon champion had “bore no fault or negligence.” In August, the independent tribunal initially found him guilty of any wrongdoing.
After reaching a settlement with Wada, Sinner ultimately accepted a three-month ban in February.
Wada claimed that while the four-time Grand Slam champion had no intentions of cheating, he was held accountable for “the entourage’s negligence.”
When Naldi applied an over-the-counter spray to treat a cut on his hand, Sinner claimed the substance clostebol, which can increase muscle mass, entered his system.
Ferrara claims he gave Naldi the spray for personal use and warned him against using it on Sinner.
In September 2004, Sinner appointed physiotherapist Ulises Badio and fitness coach Marco Panichi following the departures of Ferrara and Naldi.
However, he and the pair broke up shortly before Wimbledon this year.
Sinner made a May return to tennis at the Italian Open.
