US Open 2025
Dates: August 24 through September 7 in Flushing Meadows, New York
In the first round of the US Open, world number one Jannik Sinner defeated Vit Kopriva in a dominant straight-set victory.
In an hour and 38 minutes at Arthur Ashe Stadium, the defending champion defeated Czech player Kopriva, who is ranked 89th in the world, 6-1, 6-1, 6-2.
The 24-year-old Italian made his Cincinnati Open final match against Carlos Alcaraz last week show no signs of the illness that forced him to retire early.
After winning, Sinner expressed his happiness that he is back in good health and that we tried our hardest to stay there.
The Italian won three of the previous four majors, following victories at the Australian Open and Wimbledon last month to follow last year’s US Open success.
In a spectacular French Open final in June, Sinner lost only once this year to Spaniard Alcaraz.
When asked about returning to Flushing Meadows as the defending champion, Sinner responded, “I have amazing memories.
“Every year is different, and I’m starting this tournament off with the best of my ability, which I did.
Lorenzo Musetti, a partner of Sinner, defeated long-serving Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard 6-7 (3-7) 6-3 6-4 6-4 in the first round of men’s singles.
The Italian top seed, who won his only match win since retiring from his French Open semi-final against Alcaraz in June, lost the first set to a tie-break but did not suffer a break point.
