When one scene in Avatar demanded his character to kiss hers, Vanessa Weaver has spoken about the ways that producers watched her young co-star Jack Champion.

Sigourney Weaver has spoken out about what she called “legitimate” concerns surrounding an on-screen kiss she shares with a much younger co-star in Avatar: Fire and Ash. The actress, 76, who used motion-capture technology to play teenage Na’vi Kiri, shares a tender moment with another young character called Spider at one point in the sci-fi flick.

Spider is played by American star Jack Champion, who was just 14 when the scene was filmed. Sigourney has now explained that producers took steps to make sure his boundaries were respected on set. During a chat with The Hollywood Reporter, she said: “That scene where I say: ‘You’re perfect just as you are’, we had to be very delicate about that scene because it included a kiss. Obviously I wasn’t going to kiss Jack, who was 14 or 15, in real life.”

She continued, revealing that the kiss was captured on stand-in cameras rather than directly between the two actors. She explained, “We requested Jack choose a person I could kiss, and he did.” Then, I can imagine that they chose a Jack-a-Jack person when I wasn’t there. That concern for all of that was occurring, which is legitimate.

Sigourney claimed that the scene in the final cut of the movie was hers because she had initially worried about safeguarding it, and that the emotional connection between the characters had come across as real.

The actress also confirmed that Jack and her only other guests were present when she filmed a scene separately. Working opposite Jack felt like a “little vacation,” according to Signature, who praised Jack’s performance.

She claims that her character’s enthusiasm for Spider contributed to her performance’s sense of playfulness.

In the movie, Sigourney also compared their physical contrast, noting that Spider is a tall order over Kiri. The tall, tall actress said she enjoyed the visual muck.

Jack also spoke positively about working with Sigourney, telling Entertainment Weekly: “Since Sigourney is Sigourney, she’s so good at acting…when she’s acting, it is very unique, but it was so easy ’cause she’s such a good actress. I just reacted off her.”

Avatar: Fire and Ash has had a strong box office debut since its release on December 19 worldwide. On its opening weekend, the movie dominated the US and Canada charts, earning $88 million (£65.5%).

Additionally, it generated a total of $345 million (257 million) in the UK and Ireland, or $ 9 million, globally. Industry analysts have noted that Avatar movies typically gain momentum over time, despite the opening numbers being lower than 2022’s The Way of Water.

Previous installments held the top spot at the box office for weeks as viewers frequently returned for more. However, this third Avatar installment has received mixed reviews.

The film’s scale and visual ambition have received rave reviews from Empire and The London Evening Standard. On the other hand, Time Magazine and The Telegraph critics claimed that the franchise had lost its appeal.

James Cameron, the director of the movie, has stated that the success of upcoming sequels will depend on the level of viewer interest in continuing to explore Pandora.
