Fast two years after she first accused Shia LaBeouf of sexual battery, assault, and emotional distress, FKA Twigs successfully settled her lawsuit in court.
British singer FKA Twigs and American actor Shia LaBeouf have reached a private settlement out of court after she accused him of assault and “relentless abuse”. The case between the former couple, who dated from 2018 until the end of 2019, had been scheduled to go to trial last year, but was postponed multiple times.
We have agreed to settle our case outside of court, according to a statement from each star’s respective attorneys. We wish each other good health, success in the business world, and peace in the future, though the details of the settlement will remain confidential.
According to legal documents initially obtained by Us Weekly, the British musician, birth name Tahliah Barnett, has filed to dismiss her lawsuit against her former boyfriend with prejudice, which means she cannot refile the claims in the future.
The 37-year-old singer sued LaBeouf in 2020 for sexual battery, assault and infliction of emotional distress, alleging a pattern of “relentless” abuse. In the suit and in an interview with the New York Times, Barnett claimed that LaBeouf, whom she dated from 2018 to 2019 after meeting on the set of his semi-autobiographical film Honeyboy, knowingly exposed her to a sexually transmitted infection, attempted to strangle her and slammed her against a car.
LaBeouf has always refuted all accusations of wrongdoing. When Barnett first made her allegations public, the Transformers actor said in an email to the New York Times, “I’m not in any position to tell anyone how my behavior made them feel. I only have rationalizations to justify my alcoholism or aggression.
For years, I have been abusive to both myself and those around me. I’ve always caused harm to those closest to me. I’m sorry to those who have suffered from that history and am ashamed of it. Nothing else can I honestly say.
On Jon Bernthal’s podcast Real Ones, LaBeouf, who became a father in March 2022 with his wife Mia Goth, revealed the abuse allegations against him. Without naming any particular woman, LaBeouf said, “I hurt that woman.” And I hurt many more people before that woman, and many more people as a result. I was a self-centered, dishonest, inconsiderate, and feared person who sought pleasure.
The actor, 39, continued, “I need to be useful when I consider what my life has become, and what it is now, and what my purpose is now.” And in this #MeToo environment, not very many men are taking responsibility. I was awfully screwed up. Like shit of the type crash and burn. I am aware that I have caused a lot of harm to many people. And I’ll owe it all to myself.
During her time with LaBeouf, Barnett claimed that she felt scared, intimidated, and controlled during an interview in 2021. She shared on the BBC Radio 4 Grounded podcast that she was left with post-traumatic stress disorder, which is something she doesn’t think we really talk about as a society just in terms of the healing process and how much work must be done to recover in order to return to the person you were before.
LaBeouf made his acting debut in the 2023 premiere of Henry Johnson, a play he first portrayed in, and Francis Ford Coppola’s drama Megalopolis the following year. He is currently involved in the production of the 1967 film God of the Rodeo, which centers on the events of an inmate rodeo at Angola Prison.
In January, Barnett’s third studio album, Eusexua, peaked at number three on the UK albums chart. Due to visa issues, the Cheltenham-born singer was scheduled to play at the Coachella festival in April.
