When the canoe capsized, leading to the fatal incident, the victims’ identities were said to be on a routine trip across the river.
The death of Gidan Husaini village’s bereaved families was described as a tragic loss for the Shagari local government as well as the entire state and the Muslim Ummah by the Sokoto State Commissioner of Finance, Muhammadu Shagari, during a condolence visit to the bereaved families.
Shagari prayed for the Almighty’s forgiveness and grant them eternal rest while speaking on behalf of the Sokoto State government.
The commissioner cited the occasion to advocate for river travelers’ safety consciousness while highlighting the value of life jackets to stop such fatalities.
He also issued a warning to canoe and boat operators against overloading, stressing that a strict set of safety standards is essential to preventing future accidents.

A community elder thanked the government for its condolences and prayers, saying the visit had given them comfort during their difficult times.
