In their first group game of the African Nations Championships (CAN) title defense, Senegal defeated Nigeria 1-0 on Tuesday in a 1-0 win over Nigeria in Zanzibar’s Amaan stadium.
Before Senegal, who were hosting their West African rivals for the first time in the championships, broke the deadlock in the 75th minute, the match was evenly split between the two teams.
Serigne Koite, the Nigerian goalkeeper, pounced on a loose ball at the edge of the box, taping home the winner for Senegal.
In a game that was evenly contested, Senegal’s next opponents, Congo, defeated favourites Sudan 1-1 to draw 1-1.

After Musa Ali Hussein gave the Sudanese Falcons an early lead in the 29th minute, they were on course to score all three points.
Before releasing a right-footed shot from the left-hand corner, the Al Merrikh striker forged past two Congolese defenders to give his side a much-deserved lead.
However, underdogs Congo were able to seize the spoils in the final five minutes thanks to a defensive error.
In the 86th minute, substitute Carly Ekongo capitalized on a loose ball inside the penalty area to score the equalizer.
