Lachie Stewart, a Scottish distance runner, passed away at the age of 81.
Stewart represented Great Britain at the 1972 Munich Olympics and won 10,000m gold for Scotland at the 1970 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh.
He worked as a dental mechanic and was born Joseph Laughlin Stewart in Alexandria in 1943.
The organization’s 2018 induction ceremony honored Stewart, who added, “Everyone at Scottish Athletics and within our community sends our thoughts to Lachie’s family and his numerous friends across the sport.
Stewart, who had a brief illness, was reportedly taken to a hospital in Paisley.
He had complications with diabetes and had the lower half of his leg amputated in 2020 at the age of 77.
He told BBC Scotland at the time that his second and third toe ulcer didn’t seem to heal well.
“It quickly changed to the doctor’s advice, which is either having the pain, which was unbearable, or having the knee amputated.” Because I couldn’t stand the pain, I immediately told him to take the bottom of his leg off.
