Scottie Scheffler, the world’s number one, made his first PGA Tour appearance of the year at the American Express in California with a nine-under-par 63.
The 29-year-old has not yet won the American Express tournament, which offers the winner a prize of £1, 236, 000 ($1.656 million) to win.
Scheffler is one point ahead of Pierceson Coody, the lead actor in La Quinta, which was co-produced by Australia’s Min Woo Lee and the United States’ Pierceson Coody.
Robert MacIntyre from Scotland and Jason Day, a former US PGA champion, are all players on nine under for him.
Unusually, the field play before the Saturday cut spans three different courses.
