S Club star Jon Lee has admitted that he hadn’t dated for six years before joining the cast of Celebs Go Dating, and says that after over four decades, he finally feels confident in himself.
The S Club 7 star says he hadn’t been on a date for six years before joining the cast of Celebs Go Dating this summer, after being put off of dating.
The S Club 7 star is appearing on the new series of the dating show, which starts next week, and says he’s finally showing people a slice of who he really is. And as Mirror chats to him ahead of the show airing, Jon, 43, is feeling a mix of nerves and excitement.
From nightmare dates to therapy sessions with dating experts Paul C Brunson, Anna Williamson and Dr Tara Suwinyattichaiporn, Jon gives us the lowdown…
Hi, Jon! Are you excited to see yourself on Celebs Go Dating?
I am. I’ve got some nerves, too, there was a lot of filming over a couple of months so I’m thinking, ‘ What did I say?, ‘ What did I do? ‘ I’m nervous about what parts they’re going to use, because you might go on a date for two hours and they only use three minutes, meaning things get lost. But I got a lot more out of it than I expected to.

What made you want to do it?
I hadn’t dated in six years, I’m hopeless! So, I needed all the help I could get. But I came into it with a very open attitude, embracing the experience, I went for it 100% and I’m glad I did.
How did you find the therapy sessions with the experts?
That’s the bit I enjoyed most. The experts hold a mirror to you and why you do certain things – you look at your past and things start to click. It was nice to let that out, and it was comforting. I had previously discussed topics before, and it was therapeutic to address them loudly. How much I’d grown as a result of the experience was encouraging. Because I’m comfortable, I don’t believe I need any more therapy. However, occasionally a top-up and occasional check-ins with yourself are always beneficial.
What did you think the show’s main takeaway was?
It’s very difficult to ask someone else to fall in love with you if you’re not entirely content with who you are. That is unfair. Therefore, my advice is to ensure that you are completely content with yourself before choosing to pursue someone else. I’m so relieved that I’m now in a comfortable position and that I’m 43 years old.
Was it nice to expose your inner self in raw form?
Definitely . Because of the band, I’ve always been “Jon from S Club,” where you have to present yourself in a certain way and respond to specific questions. Therefore, for me and for the public to see being completely myself was a new experience. It was energizing.
Celebs Go Dating will begin on August 11 at 9 p.m. on E4.
