Rylan Clark seemed unfazed by the recent controversy surrounding his comments on immigration as he stepped out in high spirits at Radio 2 in the Park on Friday.

The 36-year-old singer and presenter joined his long-time friend, 56, Michelle Visage. Summer Nights, a surprise duet between the pair, won over fans.

The performance came just days after Rylan faced a wave of backlash over remarks he made about the UK’s handling of asylum seekers – comments that went viral and social media and fuelled hundreds of Ofcom complaints.

The former X Factor star caused a stir after sharing his worries about how the asylum system is being handled during a political discussion on ITV’s This Morning.

Rylan stated in his opening statement, “This nation is built on legal immigration. You are aware that many of the nurses and doctors who have saved my mother’s life have traveled from abroad, are living in great conditions, are contributing to the growth of this nation, and are contributing to its prosperity.

He continued, “I find it absolutely insane that all these people, one risking their lives to cross the channel like that, they are only two, when they arrive, it does seem, and I think this is why many Labour voters are now sitting there hoping there is a problem here, it seems like “Welcome, Come on in.” We are being fed this narrative.

“Here’s the hotel, here’s the phones, here’s the iPad, here’s the NHS in reception of your hotel, here’s three meals a day, here’s a games room in the hotel. Have a lovely time and welcome,” Rylan added.

Rylan continued to express concern for those who are already residing in the UK, including veterans and rough sleepers. Additionally, there are those who have spent the majority of their lives here who are struggling.

“All of this, veterans, people who live on the streets. Let’s be honest, everyone will have a point about this, and you might cause some uproar from someone.

“I think there needs to be serious action in this area,” I say. We have no idea who these people are, what they’ve done, what they’re capable of, and obviously, we see a lot of it in the press right now: what some are doing, but it’s not all, what some are doing to people in this country.

Following the backlash, Rylan broke his silence on Instagram, saying, “You can be pro immigration and against illegal routes. You can support trans people and have the utmost respect for women.

“You can support gay rights while also being heterosexual. The list keeps growing. Stop putting everyone in a box exercise and start talking on Twitter without getting angry.
