Elena Rybakina, the former Wimbledon champion, defeated Emma Raducanu for the first time on Friday in the fourth round of the US Open.
The Kazakhstani ninth-round champion, who was born in Moscow, outlasted Raducanu 6-1, 6-2 in an hour and a half to claim his best victory in New York.
For some reason, I’ve been a victim of the US Open for the past few years, but hopefully that will change this year,” Rybakina said in an on-court interview.

The unseeded Raducanu, the 2021 US Open champion, had appeared in command for Friday’s showdown with Rybakina on the Louis Armstrong Stadium showcourt.
However, the Kazakh broke Rybakina’s serve right away to take the early lead, and the 22-year-old faced the Kazakh from the beginning.
As the Kazakh reeled off a number of thumping forehand winners before coming out on top in a convincing victory, Raducanu had no choice but to face Rybakina’s superior strength.
Stefano Rukov, who was previously suspended for the Croat by the WTA, has restored Rybakina to her viewing area while she is playing in New York.
Vukov had been found to have violated the tour’s code of conduct, and the WTA had forbid him from playing in any tournaments.
According to the details of a WTA investigation that The Athletic reported, he had been fired by Rybakina shortly before the US Open last year and had then bombarded the player with requests to return.
After the WTA declared that Vukov had “abuse of authority and abusive behavior” toward Rybakina, he was given a year-long ban.
However, between events, Rybakina and Vukov, who has been her coach this season, reconnected. After successfully challenging his suspension, he was given the opportunity to contest his decision to play for the Cincinnati Open.
