Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events, day 1,375

On Sunday, November 30th, this is how things are going.

Fighting

• On the outskirts of Kiev, the country’s capital, Mykola Kalashnyk, regional governor Mykola Kalashnyk reported on Sunday that a Russian drone attack had killed one person and injured 11 others, including a young person.
• Six people were killed and dozens of others were hurt in Ukraine overnight as a result of Russian attacks on Saturday, killing 400, 000 Kyiv households.
• At least two of the six fatalities and 38 injuries reported in the capital, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who claimed Russia had carried out the attack with about 36 missiles and close to 600 drones.
• In response to what it called “terrorist attacks,” Russia’s Ministry of Defense confirmed that the “massive” attack had been launched. The ministry claimed that Ukrainian military-industrial and energy facilities were targeted by the strikes.
• The ministry announced on Saturday night that it had shot down 158 Ukrainian drones and two long-range missiles over the course of the day, while the Russian state-run TASS news agency reported that five Ukrainian drone attacks had claimed the lives of five people in Belgorod and Volgograd.
• A senior woman who was seriously hurt in a Ukrainian attack in Rostov on November 25 passed away from her injuries in a hospital, according to TASS, who also reported a death toll increase to four.
• According to Ukrainian intelligence officials, Ukrainian naval drones flew over two sanctioned tankers in the Black Sea on Friday as they were heading to a Russian port to load up with oil destined for foreign markets.
• The Caspian Pipeline Consortium, which handles more than 1% of global oil, announced on Saturday that it had suspended operations after a Ukrainian naval drone attack severely damaged a docking at Russia’s Black Sea terminal. Energy is mostly transported by the business from Kazakhstan, which criticized the attack as unacceptable.
• The Russian military reported hitting the Afipsky oil refinery overnight in the Krasnodar region of Russia on Saturday, as well as the Rostov military aviation plant, adding that there had been reports of explosions and a fire at the refinery.
• Russian drones entered Moldovan airspace, according to officials, posing a threat to aviation in the third incident in nine days.

diplomacy and politics

Rustem Umerov, the country’s Security Council secretary, and Zelenskyy announced that a Ukrainian delegation was headed for the US to continue discussions involving Russia’s nearly four-year-old war.
• A senior US official told Reuters news agency that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, special envoy Steve Witkoff, and son-in-law Jared Kushner of US president Donald Trump are scheduled to meet with Ukrainian officials in Florida for discussions.
• Following discussions in Geneva, Zelenskyy and French President Emmanuel Macron are scheduled to meet in Paris on Monday to discuss “the conditions of a just and durable peace” and the US peace plan.
• Andriy Yermak, Zelenskyy’s former top official, said he will be going to the front lines of the war and that he is an “honest and decent person.” He resigned on Friday amid a corruption investigation.
• Four men are being detained by South African police as they travel to Russia and are suspected of having been recruited there to fight there. According to police, the men were stopped at the boarding gate in Johannesburg after being duped into joining the mercenary forces and promised lucrative contracts.
• In response to Russia’s growing tensions, Polish prosecutor’s offices have charged two Ukrainians and three Belarusians with working for a foreign intelligence service. Although the prosecutor’s office did not specify which nation was involved, Warsaw has frequently accused Moscow of attempting to sabotage and engage in “hybrid warfare” in response to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
• Following the recent sabotage it attributed to Russia, Poland also announced that it would improve the country’s railway security. As Ukraine fights off an invasion launched by Russia in 2022, Poland, a NATO member, has become the main hub for the movement’s Western allies.

Censorship

• Russia alleged that the well-known messaging service WhatsApp had failed to stop crime and that it was considering switching to domestic alternatives after announcing it would do so on Friday. WhatsApp, owned by US tech company Meta, claimed Russia was trying to outlaw the app because it “defies government attempts to violate people’s right to secure communication.”

Human rights

Despite Moscow calling it an “undesirable” organization, Human Rights Watch (HRW) made the promise to continue looking into Russia’s actions or those of its military in Ukraine. HRW was “not surprised” by the designation, which effectively criminalizes it in Russia, according to Tanya Lokshina, senior associate director of the group’s Europe and Central Asia division.
