Ruby Wax already had a cult following under the I’m A Celeb banner, which appealed to many viewers. She now opens up about what actually transpired in the background in a Mirror interview.
She was a straight-talking jungle sensation and many people’s pick for the final. And following her shock eviction from camp, Ruby Wax is just as unfiltered in the outside world too. In a candid chat with the Mirror, the 72-year-old has shattered any hope that Shona McGarty and Aitch could share a jungle romance once and for all.
The star told how the EastEnders actress secretly confided in her that the rapper was “not her type” in scenes not aired by ITV. And she also had stern words for Shona who was caught scoffing butter which had been smuggled into camp – branding her “selfish” and “entitled”. Opening up about Shona’s confession about Aitch, Ruby said: “He’s not her type at all. She said she likes hunky, bigger men so that she feels female, so he wasn’t on the list at all.”
She also referred to Aitch’s 25-year-old age as the “age difference,” while Shona’s is 34. I desired her to marry him, Ruby says. I believed we could have children and live forever in the forest. However, she claimed that this type of behavior was not her. No go, I anticipated the next generation would live in the forest.
She explained to the two youngest people that she was unsure of why she believed they could have made a good couple. “They both sang. Not, why? I engaged in mating rituals. She then stopped being interested. He also lacked that quality. No, I believe he was just drawn to her. She enjoys big men.
The conversation came amid frenzied speculation that something was brewing between the two campmates. Aitch had confessed his feelings about Shona to Angry Ginge at the end of last week, admitting: “I’ve got a bit of a soft spot for Shona, me.” Ant and Dec in particular were desperate for a jungle romance, with Ant saying: “It’s been a while since we’ve had a proper romance on this show. We’d love to see it….we would celebrate it.”
Ruby’s announcement to leave the camp, which she claimed left her “devastated,” was made after she became the fifth person to do so. As she crossed the bridge to be reunited with her husband, she described how it felt like she had been “torn from my family.”
But she was later left shocked after learning the true number of milkbottles that Kelly Brook, Aitch and Ginge ate. And more generally she was deeply unimpressed by those breaking the rules with contraband. Shona was seemingly at the top of her hit-list for keeping the butter to herself. “That’s selfish….Shona was an insecure, kind of anxious person, and she’s come out of herself, and she’s verging on kind of entitlement,” she says. “She started off a really shy, inhibited person, and now look at her.”
Ruby said she knew “nothing” about the smuggled contraband, including Alex Scott bringing in salt. “It took me by surprise. And Alex… she’s so refined, she brought it in, but none of them shared it,” she says. “People are greedy and hard.” Instead she was proud that she “obeyed the rules” unlike others, which also included Shona bringing in air-freshener for the dunny.
She continued, “Where did they get the nerve?” because we are all in danger. Why is deodorant, exactly? What do you know? Someone is interested in what their body smells like because we don’t have any food. It’s a s***hole. It has s*** in it, and it’s a hole. What makes the deodorizer important to you?
Ruby claims she never saw it or that she would have “ripped it out of her hand.” Of all things, she continued, “But nothing more than a cleaning tablet is necessary.” For two weeks, we wore these things. I mean, I still feel itchy. Never washed out the underwear. Sorry to share. There were only a few times that mine were flipped over.
Ruby acknowledges that the food she ate was the most difficult to endure because of how much it cost. She claims, “I was starving. … It was always revolting. a black chicken with web feet on it. a crocodile with fingernails or an eel with teeth. And that was believed to be edible. Jack would always say, “It’s like chicken,” and he never looked back. “It never was chicken like.” It was obscene. But being the camp leader was the one thing she adored, not least because it required putting her feet in the air.
She acknowledges that because it was included in the rule book, I enjoyed it and never had to do anything. I would have continued working until the end of the day because The Queen doesn’t have to. Ruthie also shared some of her camp friendships, particularly those with Ginge, Lisa Riley, Aitch, and Tom. She claims Ruby and Ginge will collaborate on a streaming show together in the future, and she says she intends to do so.
