After exceeding the signing deadline for the Nigerian striker as a free agent, Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers says Kelechi Iheanacho will “make a big contribution”.

The 28-year-old Nigeria international signed a one-year deal just hours after reaching a deal with Sevilla to end his contract with the Spanish club.

It comes after Celtic’s supporters criticize them for not signing a striker on transfer deadline day.

Rodgers has reconnected with the player he managed while playing for Leicester City for seven years.

He can be a great signing for us because he has great experience and is at his best. He will certainly contribute a lot to the team, I can assure you.

Adam Idah would not be permitted to depart without a replacement being signed, according to Rodgers’ statement last week.

The Affiliation of Celtic Supporters Clubs was one of those who expressed outrage when the Irishman was sold to Swansea City on deadline day without Celtic finding a buyer. Chief executive Michael Nicholson was asked to explain the “failure to strengthen the squad” and “the disarray witnessed on the final evening of the transfer window.”

Rodgers did, however, say that Iheanacho “will enjoy being at Celtic and that our fans will enjoy what he brings.”

Iheanacho, who won 59 goals in his senior season, made his senior debut with Manchester City, earning a medal for the Etihad.

He then joined Leicester City, won the FA Cup in 2021, and placed second overall in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
