Josh Rock of Northern Ireland defeated Gemma Hayter of England in the first round of the PDC World Championships, which gave him a 3-1 lead.
The 24-year-old is considered one of the favorites to win the world title despite being the 11th seed at this year’s event but has qualified for the semi-finals of the World Matchplay, World Series Finals, and UK Open this year. Additionally, winning the World Cup alongside Daryl Gurney makes him one of the favorites to win the title.
Hayter pulled a set back after falling 2-0 behind after Rock’s poor finishing in the third set, which included only one of his 11 doubles attempts.
As the match progressed, her level increased, and she won the fourth set before Rock’s decisive check out of 81, earning the victory.
With a 3-1 victory over Matthew Dennant from England, Dutchman Kevin Doets and Kenya’s David Munyua opened a second-round meeting.
Doets averaged more than 92 points, but Dennant made a strong defense and won the match, eventually winning both the third and fourth sets.
In a tie, American Leonard Gates defeated Mickey Mansell from Northern Ireland.
As Gates went on to win 3-2, with one leg won by Mansell in the fourth set thanks to 33 darts, neither player was able to win consecutive sets.
In Friday’s evening session, four more matches are scheduled for the end of the first round.
