In a chilling admission just months before he was murdered, Rob Reiner admitted he loved his children, ‘even the bad ones’, in what is believed to be one of his final interviews
Rob Reiner said he “loved his kids – even the bad one” months before his death. The Hollywood film director and his wife, Michele, were found dead at their home in Los Angeles.
The couple allegedly had their throats slit by a relative after an argument. Documents obtained by the Mirror have shown that their son Nick, 32, is currently being held in custody. He is also being held on a $4million (£3million) bail in connection with the murder.
The agency description of his arrest was listed as “Gang Activity.” Nick was arrested on Sunday at 21:15 local time and booked on Monday morning. But in what is believed to be one of Rob’s final interviews, he admitted he loved all of his children “even the bad ones”.
Speaking to Piers Morgan, Rob said: “Well, I mean, listen, people have their favourites. [It’s] the cliché, ‘We love all our children, even the bad ones.” Reports claim that Rob and his son Nick had a “very loud argument” while attending Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party on Saturday night.
TMZ reports that Rob and Michele then left the party. A source told the publication that Michele had been telling friends in her final months that she and Rob were at their “wits’ end” over Nick and his alleged substance abuse, saying: “We’ve tried everything.”
The Los Angeles Fire Department were called to the home in Brentwood to offer medical aid at 3:30pm local time on Sunday and found a man, 78, and a woman, 68. They had already died. Police confirmed that both victims had suffered from lacerations “consistent with a knife [attack].”
It’s believed that their daughter, Romy, had discovered them at the huge property. Romy has told police that a family member “should be a suspect” as they were “dangerous”.
A spokesperson for the Reiner family said: “It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time.”
Meanwhile, Rob’s eldest daughter, Tracy Reiner, who was adopted by the star during his first marriage to Penny Marshall, said she was in “shock.” Speaking to NBC, she said: “I came from the greatest family ever. I don’t know what to say. I’m in shock.”
She told how she had seen her father the day before for a family gathering. “I came from the greatest family ever,” she said. “I don’t know what to say. I’m in shock.” A senior officer told the Mirror that investigators intended to speak with all relevant family members and associates as part of a routine procedure in a case of this nature.
“We’re going to try to speak to every family member that we can to get to the facts of this investigation,” the officer said, adding that detectives were set to re-enter the sprawling six-bedroomed property to conduct a detailed forensic examination.
He noted that the house had been left in the same condition as when officers first arrived, after police determined there was no ongoing threat. During a press conference on Sunday, the police confirmed that they were seeking to obtain a search warrant for a home and were “not looking for anyone as a suspect or in any other manner.”
