In a heartfelt statement posted on social media, Australian rock group Midnight Oil confirmed the passing of its drummer and co-founder, Rob Hirst.
Midnight Oil, a well-known Australian rock group, has passed away. The band reported that Rob Hirst had passed away on Tuesday, confirming his death.
The band posted a heartbreaking statement on their website, saying that Rob has now recovered from his agony, which is “a glimmer of tiny light in the wilderness.”
He passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones. “Robert was 70 years old. The band’s politically charged singles were most well-known. Beds Are Burning and The Dead Heart two of these. The band’s 1987 album, Diesel and Dust, which included the hits.

Hirst and guitarist Jim Moginie founded the band in 1976. Peter Garret, a singer, and the pair joined forces to play together until 2002.
The group was pipped to the post in 1989 and 1991 despite receiving nominated for Grammys in 1989 and 1991. After splitting in 2002, they reformed in 2016 until 2022.
Jim claimed that Rob was “the engine room, onstage, and off” for Midnight Oil in a previous interview with The Guardian. Rob was brash, funny, and super intelligent, contrary to the stereotypical perception of drummers, he claimed in his memoir, The Silver River in 2024.
Rob claimed in April of last year that he had been treated by “every single person’s doctor” in an effort to fight his cancer. He attempted to raise money by selling a drum set Midnight Oil played on tour for a month in October 1979 through an auction in October.
The money would be used to assist Australian musicians who were struggling to make ends meet. Fans paid tribute to the drummer after learning of his death.

Hoodoo Gurus also shared a tribute for the star. In it, they noted his close friendship with bassist Rick Grossman. The group posted: “You left this world a far better place than the way you found it. Your creativity, passion and joy has left its mark on all of us, and the strength of your spirit will be an inspiration forever. A life well lived.”
