Ipalibo Harry-Banigo, the senator representing the Rivers West Senatorial District, has demanded that an investigation be looked into the recent explosions at various NNPCL locations in the Bonny and Degema Local Government Areas.
Following a similar incident that was reported just two weeks ago in Bukuma (Agum) in Degema Local Government Area, the most recent explosion occurred two days ago around Bonny’s Cawthorne Channel.
Senator Harry-Banigo who described the frequency of these incidents as alarming, said, “The recurrence of these fire outbreaks within the same OML 18 location in such a short time is deeply troubling, adding that” any responsible society, organization, or institution should consider this a matter of grave concern. “

The Senator urged NNPCL, the OML 18 operators, to launch a thorough investigation into the explosions, who is also the immediate former Deputy Governor of Rivers State.

She urged that the investigation “describe both the host community’s and the explosions’ immediate and underlying causes,” as well as their effects on the environment and their livelihoods.
The Senator emphasized that operators must uphold the highest safety standards while also acknowledging that host communities can help guard oil installations on their territory.
