Rivers Lawmakers Suspend Sitting “Indefinitely” After Fubara’s Letter To Present 2025 Budget

Rivers Lawmakers Suspend Sitting “Indefinitely” After Fubara’s Letter To Present 2025 Budget

Rivers State’s political conflict is growing, most recently resulting in an indefinite adjournment of the House of Assembly.

Fubara had received a new letter from the House on Thursday letting them know that he would be re-presenting the 2025 Appropriation Bill for consideration and approval.

the letter addressed to Rt. Hon. Governor Fubara, Martin Amaewhule, recalled his earlier attempt to present the budget on March 12 that was unsuccessful because he was denied entry to the assembly chambers.

He claimed that he and his entourage were locked out despite receiving a soft copy notice prior to the event and making attempts to submit a hard copy through the clerk.

The governor emphasized that his attempt was in line with a Supreme Court decision, which, he noted, had also mandated that the Assembly carry out its duties within the meaning of the Constitution.

He also made a note to the Speaker that the House had previously issued a 48-hour deadline for the budget’s presentation, even before he received a certified copy of the judgment and enrolled orders.

Despite the state’s political crisis, Governor Fubara reaffirmed his commitment to good governance.

He urged all branches of government to carry out their responsibilities in accordance with the law and the constitution in order to advance the common good of the people.

We think the needs of the state and the people should be prioritized over political conflicts, he said, regardless of how much of our differences are.

The lawmakers claimed to have adjourned sitting “indefinitely,” which was a statement released by the media aide to the Speaker, Martins Wachukwu, indicating the end of the current legislative session.

Before returning to the House, the statement said in part that “this adjournment allows lawmakers to concentrate on the implementation of the newly passed laws and other pressing issues.”

No reconvening date was set.

Three bills were passed into law as a result of the move.

During a recent legislative session, Amaewhule was formally given the bills.

The Speaker continued their remarks by stating that the three bills are intended to strengthen the state’s legal capacity and promote development.

Bills’ Key Highlights:

  1. The State House of Assembly’s powers and privileges are described in Rivers State Powers and Privileges Bill 2025*, to ensure its autonomy and effectiveness in carrying out legislative duties.
  2. In order to promote transparency and fairness in the democratic process, Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission Bill 2025, which is focused on electoral reforms, is intended to establish an independent commission to oversee local government elections.
  3. Rivers State Local Government Bill 2025: This legislation aims to improve local government governance, promote effective service delivery, and promote grassroots governance.

The Rivers State House of Assembly’s legislative agenda is marked by the passage of these bills. Rt. Hon. In his remarks, Martin Amaewhule reiterated the Assembly’s commitment to passing laws that promote sustainable development and address the needs of the population.

The House adjourned indefinitely following the successful passage of the bills, bringing the current legislative session to its conclusion without a set date for reconvening. Before returning to the House, lawmakers can concentrate on implementing the newly passed laws and other pressing issues.
