After two years of darkness, electricity supply was restored in some areas of Abonnema town, the headquarters of the Rivers State’s Akuku-Toru Local Government Area.
Following the federal government’s push for local government financial autonomy under President Bola Tinubu’s rule, local government stakeholders claim that the development is a part of efforts to promote growth.
With more local government resources being used to address pressing community needs, the policy in Rivers State appears to be working.
Our correspondent, who traveled to the affected areas to observe the residents’ enthusiasm for the return of power after years of abandonment, pointed out that the Tinubu administration was required to abide by all state laws after the Supreme Court’s decision affirming local government financial autonomy.
The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, ALGON, the state’s executive branch, claimed that the state government made sure that funds for local governments weren’t hacked and that they were among the first to receive full statutory allocations even before the judgment.
The 23 state local government chairmen, who were only elected three months ago, have begun showcasing the impact of development in their respective councils as the yuletide season is upon us.
Residents of the Abonnema Local Government Area, which have been without power for more than two years, report being impressed with the council chairman’s performance.
Some Ward 13 residents claimed that, especially for small business owners who couldn’t afford alternative power sources, the prolonged power outage had a negative impact on their livelihoods.

While observing his 100th day in office, the Akuku-Toru Local Government Chairman, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), outlined a number of infrastructure projects that were being worked on quickly while applauding President Tinubu for his reforms.
The council secretariat renovation and the construction of an ultra-modern event center are among the projects under construction.
Abonnema residents agreed that the projects will promote urban development and enhance the council’s governance.
