Rivers APC Faults State Assembly Over Fubara Impeachment Move

The Rivers State House of Assembly has been accused of impeachment by a camp affiliated with the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Rivers State, warning that the move could destabilize both the party and the state.

The APC stated in a press release on Friday that it had reviewed the Assembly’s progress and was concerned about what it termed a “choreographed legislative coup d’état,” and that it had signed a statement signed by its spokesperson, Darlington Nwauju.

“We have conducted thorough analysis of the issues that led to the most recent action taken by Rivers State House of Assembly members today,” according to the electorate to move forward with the impeachment of vice governor Prof. Ngozi Odu and governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Regrettably, the statement reads, “We regret that honorable members who trumpeted loyalty to our party and Mr. President can give themselves to the unfolding choreographed legislative coup d’état against the collective interest, growth, and development of our party in the state.”

Rivers State could not afford actions that threaten political stability, according to the party, which accused some lawmakers, including APC members, of abiding by its wishes.

The Assembly’s ability to begin impeachment is largely subjective, as what qualifies as “gross misconduct” under Section 188 is open to political interpretation by legislators, it added.

No matter how beautifully made the allegations made against the Governor and his Deputy are, they still stand in the way of public opinion, the statement continued.

The Assembly’s choice of course could have long-term effects on the party’s survival in Rivers State, according to the APC, who cited the development as a risky precedent.

Therefore, the legislative branch’s choice of course serves as a risky footnote for the APC’s health and survival in Rivers State, it said.

The party also requested that the Rivers State Chief Judge follow the interim injunction, which forbids him from passing or opposing House of Assembly resolutions related to the impeachment process.

We also urge the Honourable Chief Judge of Rivers State to follow the interim injunction issued yesterday in Suit No. The Rivers State House of Assembly resolutions were halted by OYHC/7/CS/2026, according to the statement.

Further, it made an appeal to the APC’s national leadership to immediately intervene by activating internal mechanisms made available to the National Working Committee in accordance with Article 21(b)(iii) of the party’s amended Constitution.
