Reps Make U-Turn On Bill To Remove Immunity Enjoyed By VP, Govs, Deputies

The second reading of a bill for an act to remove the immunity granted to the vice president, state governors, and their deputies has resulted in the House of Representatives’ rescinding its decision.

According to reports, the bill was introduced to combat corruption, end impunity, and promote accountability in public office.

The House has since withdrawn the second reading passage, saying that the bill’s provisions must be debated in order to be rescissioned.

Additionally, the House reversed its decision regarding a bill to end the death penalty.

On Wednesday, 42 constitutional amendment bills passed the House of Representatives for second reading, including the one that removes the vice president’s, governors, and their deputies’ immunity.

Meanwhile, a bill to amend the provisions of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria passed second reading in the House of Representatives on Thursday to change the rules governing the election of the president and the prime minister as heads of state.

It is one of the 32 bills introducing the amendments to the Constitution that went into second reading the day before.

A bill to amend the provisions of the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s Constitution of 1999 to give women specific seats in state legislatures and houses of assembly is also included in the bills.
