Mikaela Shiffrin’s winning start to the women’s World Cup slalom season was ended by Camille Rast of Switzerland’s stunning second run in Kranjska Gora.

When Shiffrin added her victory in the final slalom of last year to her own record of six straight victories in the discipline, she won the first five slalom events.

However, Rast’s emotional weekend came to an end, with Sunday’s heartfelt victory over the American star and her debut World Cup triumph on Saturday in the giant slalom at the same Slovenian resort.

Rast, 26, dedicated the previous day’s giant slalom win to those who died in a bar fire in her hometown of Crans-Montana on January 1st, saying, “I gave it everything I had this weekend.”

Rast, who had a close second to Shiffrin in the previous weekend’s World Cup slalom competition in Semmering, was not denied a second chance, giving her a perfect record of 106 wins in all disciplines.

“I believe a lot of energy] was the solution,” Rast continued. It was a significant conflict. The preparation was flawless, and it really made a difference.

After the first run, Shiffrin, 30, was just 0.01 seconds behind leader Rast, but his powerful time in the second gave him a 1.69 seconds lead over the rest of the field.

Rast, however, moved up even further to overtake Shiffrin by 0.14 seconds.

The Swiss skier said on Saturday that she was thinking about all the families who lost their lives in her hometown and that we raced for them this weekend.

“Sports bring emotion, and I hope I can inspire some positive emotions in people today.”

It’s really difficult to know how it feels when you’re not home, but it’s certainly difficult, and I hope I can make some people smile today.

Despite the improbable defeat, Shiffrin remained close to her best and will now attempt to win the final two World Cup slalom competitions before the Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina kick off on February 6th.
