In this week’s brand-new US Open mixed doubles competition in New York, British tennis stars Emma Raducanu and Jack Draper will square off against one another.

After Tommy Paul and Paula Badosa’s original partners, Tommy Paul and Paula Badosa, both withdrew, Raducanu, 22, and Carlos Alcaraz, 23, their former partners, both 23 years old, will play together.

After announcing that the mixed doubles competition would be a standalone event on August 19 and 20, before the 24-hour singles competition, the organizers faced harsh criticism in February.

At Flushing Meadows, the 16 pairs competing will compete for $1 million (£749, 077).

The two-day competition will feature a wildcard entry for Spaniard Alcaraz and former US Open champion Raducanu, who won the tournament in 2021.

Alcaraz, 22, will face Jannik Sinner in the Cincinnati Open final on Monday in Ohio for the fourth time this year.

After his partner, American Emma Navarro, withdrew, Italian Sinner, 24, who is also a wildcard entry, was re-paired with Czech Katerina Siniakova.

Draper and Pegula, who both currently rank among the top five in the singles rankings, have qualified directly for the top seeding.

The semi-finals and final will be played on Wednesday, with the first two rounds taking place on Tuesday.
