Virgil van Dijk, the Reds captain, called Arne Slot “disrespectful” when questioned about rumor linking Xabi Alonso to his position as manager of Liverpool.
A journalist questioned Alonso, the former Liverpool player, on Tuesday, about whether or not he had spoken to him before he left his position as Real Madrid’s head coach “mutually.”
Slot joked that the Spaniard had called him to say he would “take over in six months, or maybe sooner,” making fun of what he called “one of the weirdest questions.”
The query was raised ahead of Liverpool’s 3-0 Champions League victory at Marseille.
Van Dijk was eager to criticize Liverpool after the game, but the journalist who posed the Alonso question did not.
The Dutch defender responded, “That (question) was disrespectful.
If you take a look at what we’re doing this season, especially in light of the previous season, criticism is justified.
The manager and the players both had trouble with it, but he has handled it well.
According to Van Dijk, who became the club’s 50th player to make 350 appearances, one of Liverpool’s most “complete performances” of the season came against Marseille.
The 34-year-old praised “keeping a clean sheet in my 350th game, win 3-0, and keep a clean sheet,” said the 34-year-old.
The Reds are well-positioned to reach the top eight of the league and advance to the last-16 in March, avoiding the knockout play-off round in February.
On Wednesday, January 28, they take on Qarabag knowing that victory will earn them a top-four spot, a home tie in the second leg of the last-16, and a quarter-final spot if they succeed.
However, Van Dijk’s attention has already turned to Bournemouth’s league game on Saturday.
Since losing to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League on November 26 with a 4-1 win, Liverpool have lost 13 games.
To move into fourth place in the table, 14 points clear of leaders Arsenal, they have won just four of their ten Premier League games, drawing the last four.
