In the midst of high regional tensions, Qatar’s emir has opened a meeting with Iran’s supreme leader in Tehran, which is expected to include a meeting with the country’s emir.
At a joint news briefing with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Wednesday, Qatar’s Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian expressed their delight to travel to Iran.
According to Pezeshkian, the two countries have close ties and share “similar points of view on global issues and the region.”
Following months of fighting in Lebanon and Gaza, a transitional government is in place in Syria and President Bashar al-Assad’s office, and tensions are still high throughout the region.
Sheikh Tamim and the leaders spoke about “the participation of all categories in Syria and the unification of the Syrian territories” and “determining their future.
After 15 months of Israel’s occupation of Gaza, Pezeshkian expressed gratitude to Qatar for its mediation efforts.
The leaders also discussed boosting economic ties.
Sheikh Tamim stated that we have “confirmed the necessity of looking into the possibility of expanding trade and opening new markets for our two nations.”
Tohid Asadi, a professor of politics at the University of Tehran, said the meeting was “critically important”.
“We heard the two leaders put an emphasis on the necessity of peace in the region]and] on the necessity of expanding]economic] ties”, Asadi said.
