Prince Harry ‘regrets’ some of his divisive actions since he left the royal family, and is now hoping to ‘reset’ both his relationship with the public and his estranged family, according to a royal insider.

The Duke of Sussex left the UK yesterday after a whirlwind four-day trip to his home country, in which he attended the WellChild Awards on Monday, before travelling to a series of other charity engagements.

In between two important events on Wednesday, Harry made time to visit his estranged father King Charles at Clarence House in London, with their private tea lasting 55 minutes.

With their meeting – the first in 19 months – believed to have been successful, a royal insider told the Daily Mail that Harry’s conversation with his father is his way of paving the road to reconciliation, and trying to apologise to the royal family for his actions over the last five years.

An insider told the publication: “It’s become clear that Harry now regrets some of his actions. He wants to reset his relationship with his family and with the people of the UK.”

The source added that by Harry building bridges with his father, it will give King Charles a chance to have more of a relationship with his grandchildren, Archie and Lilibet, who live in California.

They said: “It’s hard to see [Harry] ever coming back to live in Britain but this may be the start of something that at least allows them to be a functioning wider family again.”

Just hours after Prince Harry’s meeting with King Charles, a spokesperson for the Duke of Sussex shared a statement that Harry “loved” being back in the UK and suggested the visit had gone well, saying: “He’s obviously loved being back in the UK, catching up with old friends, colleagues and just generally being able to support the incredible work of the causes that mean so much to him.”

While the meeting between Harry and Charles was a positive step in the right direction, it is unlikely to mean that a wider royal reconciliation will happen overnight.

Prince Harry, who is currently on a visit to Ukraine, has long shared that he “would love a reconciliation” with the royal family, telling the BBC in May: “There’s no point continuing to fight any more, life is precious.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Harry acknowledged that some of his family members would find it difficult to forgive him, after levelling several accusations against the royal family, but insisted he would like to rebuild the relationship with his father, especially in light of the King’s cancer diagnosis.
