The Ekiti State Police Command discovered and recovered the one-day-old baby boy who was allegedly stolen from the Oke-Iyimi Health Center in Ado-Ekiti on Monday.
Joseph Aribo, the state’s police commissioner, made this known to journalists on Wednesday.
Aribo reported that the suspect left a cotton wool with a receipt in the hospital and was later tracked to a well-known supermarket, where she was eventually discovered through their CCTV after the Command received a distress call about the missing baby on Monday and immediately took action.
After losing her pregnancy in March of 2025, Deborah Ayeni, 34, claimed she made the decision to commit the willful act in order to avoid being abandoned by her fiance.
Deborah, who admitted to wrapping clothes in her belly to conceal a fake pregnancy, claimed their fiance had visited the United Kingdom in 2024 and had been traveling alone since then.
She continued, stating that she feared being abandoned if she had informed her finances after losing her pregnancy. So, her search and desperation to find a baby to cover up the disappointment.
She stated, “I stole the baby because I needed it.” I met the hospital where we were having a conversation, and I left with the baby after a while.
I was expecting last year before my husband traveled to the UK, but I miscarried in March of this year despite not telling my husband that I had miscarried.
Although I’m not legally married, I did my introduction last year and was considering whether or not he would leave me because this is my first child stealing.
When I feigned being pregnant by packing clothes in my stomach, I was not admitted there.
On Sunday morning, my mother and I began playing because I was able to communicate in Hausa. Her husband requested that she assist him in carrying the child while he went shopping. Around 4 a.m., I stole the baby, and I saw Bike ten minutes later.
Mustapha Aliyu, 29, the father of the child, described her as being very jovial with him the day his wife delivered the boy. He said he didn’t anticipate such would-be acts from Deborah.
Even though he didn’t know her, Aliyu claimed that she was in the hospital on Sunday on a delivery request but that he had to supervise her while she was still in the hospital.
He mentioned that she had earlier traveled to another hospital on Sunday and that she might have gone there to scout before having the operation at Oke-Iyimi Health Center.
