Police backtrack, restore Meranda’s security as two speakers emerge in Lagos Assembly

Lagos Police Commissioner Moshood Jimoh, has backtracked, saying the security personnel attached to the Speaker of the Lagos House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda, earlier withdrawn, have been restored.

Jimoh addressed journalists on Thursday at the police command’s headquarters, stating that the personnel had been “ongoing audits of police personnel and firearms” and were not withdrawn for any ulterior reasons.

The police have established a statutory procedure to conduct periodic audits of police personnel associated with prominent personalities and groups. Lagos State Police Command is not the only entity that can demonstrate this.

It makes sure police officers are present, complete with their weapons and other pieces of crime-fighting equipment.

Additionally, it makes sure that they are kept at their assigned positions and that no one gets hurt while using their weapons and equipment.

The exercise will also give the command the opportunity to track down police officers who have been posted without their permission or for unapproved or illegal duties.

“This will allow us to withdraw those from unapproved posts, those with invalid approvals, and those on illegal duties, redeploying them to police posts, stations, divisions, and area commands to provide security and safety for all Lagosians.

Lagos State, the Center of Excellence, has a population of more than 20 million people, but only has under 18 000 total police officers, and needs more officers at police posts, stations, and divisions to ensure the state’s safety and adequate protection of lives and property, he said.

Every Nigerian in need of police protection is a mandated security coverage, Jimoh added.

“The Force will have a central control over the deployment of police personnel for guard duties and personal protection,” the Force said.

Some police personnel approvals associated with some celebrities in Lagos State cannot be traced or verified in the ongoing personnel audit.
