The suspected cult leader is “believed to be involved in a series of violent cult-related attacks in Ondo town, including the recent brutal assault on innocent civilians at a public viewing center,” according to the spokesperson of the Ondo Police Command, Olayinka Olushola, in a statement on Tuesday.

Following extensive intelligence gathering and a well-planned tactical operation by operatives of the Command, the suspect was apprehended at his hideout, according to the statement.

According to preliminary findings, the suspect was key in a previous attack that resulted in the killing of members of a rival cult in Ondo town earlier this year.

The suspect had previously been linked to violence at Template Bar and Club in Ondo on July 13, 2025, according to the police.

It claimed that several injuries were caused by suspected cultists who randomly opened fire on unsuspecting football enthusiasts during the attack.

The Ondo Police Command stated that the suspect is being interrogated and that this careless deed “not only endangered the lives of peace-loving residents,” but it also “posed a direct threat to public peace and safety, which the Command continues to uphold.”

The police stated that “intensive efforts are being made to locate, track, and apprehend additional gang members who are fugitives.”

One English-made Beretta pistol with five live 3mm rounds, one locally produced pistol with two cartridges, three battle axes, three cutlasses, and two daggers/knives were among the items recovered during the investigation. Other items include cult insignias (local lamps, berets, jackets, and face caps), illegal drugs, and suspected Indian hemp.

In addition, the police command reported that it had detained 30 male suspected cultists between June and July 2025, and that they had all since been taken into custody.

The Command “reported significant success during this year’s 7/7 cult anniversary period, which has historically seen violent clashes between rival groups,” according to the police.
