A suspected armed robber who donned a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) uniform to evade security checks has been taken into custody by Enugu State Police Command operations.
The suspect, identified as 25-year-old Chinecherem Ugwuagu, was detained on October 11 along the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway, according to a statement from the Command’s spokesman, Daniel Ndukwe, who released a statement on Monday.
He claimed that Ugwuagu was being escorted by police from the Safer Highway Patrol while he was escaping from a robbed Carter motorcycle.
A gun-like object made of clothing, a bank ATM card, and other items was recovered from him.
Investigations revealed that the suspect broke into a victim’s home at 9th Mile in the Udi Local Government Area earlier that morning, according to Ndukwe.

Before disguising in the NYSC uniform, he allegedly threatened the victim with the imitation gun and robbed him of the items he had recovered.
Ndukwe stated that the suspect was wearing a uniform to deter detection but was actually detained by eagle-eyed operatives.
Once investigations are finished, the suspect will be charged in court, he added.
The officers were praised for their promptness and professionalism by CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, the police commissioner.
He urged residents to remain law-abiding and provide reliable information to the police, and reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to battling crime.
