Peter Obi Never Arrested El-Rufai – Aisha Yesufu

Aisha Yesufu, a political activist and co-founder of the #BringBackOurGirls movement, has refuted claims that former Anambra State governor Peter Obi ordered the arrest of former governor Nasir El-Rufai while Obi served as governor of Anambra State.

Yesufu made clear that El-Rufai was being detained in Anambra by Department of State Services (DSS) employees and not by Peter Obi at his request during a Monday interview with Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily.

Her response came after Paul Ohonbamu, the state’s commissioner for information and communication, made a comment while responding to Governor Monday Okpebholo’s warning to Obi not to enter the state again.

Yesufu claimed that the governor “said what he said very clearly, and that poses a threat to life.” Beyond that, the Edo State Government issued a statement in which they stated Obi needs to inform them of his arrival and obtain security clearance.

“I don’t know what justifies Governor Okpebholo’s audacity to grant any Nigerians permission to enter Edo State.” His family does not own Edo State. He may be in charge of the state, but he doesn’t have the authority to appoint anyone, she continued.

Further, Yesufu further refuted the claim that Obi was behind El-Rufai’s arrest, saying, “There was also something in the statement the Edo State government released based on the threat the governor had made to Mr. Obi, where he claimed that he is not like Mr. Obi who led to El-Rufai’s arrest in Anambra State.

That is not factual, the statement. Former governor of Kaduna State was never detained by Mr. Obi. He was detained in Anambra State, but the DSS never intervened in his arrest, and the above-set-right order never involved Mr. Obi.

During the state’s governorship election in November 2013, DSS officials detained El-Rufai, a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in Anambra. El-Rufai had claimed to be in Anambra to watch the election, but he was stopped and taken to his hotel in Awka.

According to the DSS, the move was prompted by “security concerns” at the time.
