The TV icon’s friend, Paul Danan’s friend, has confirmed that he was found dead on his couch. On January 15, Paul, 46, was unresponsive at his Bristol home. The late actor, who was known for his roles on Channel 4’s Hollyoaks and Celebrity Big Brother, died from a combination of drugs, including cocaine and heroin.
According to the coroner, Paul’s friends called 911 after not seeing him. A neighbor entered his home and they were able to locate him for two days before he passed away.
Paul was lying slumped against the edge of his sofa, the television still on, and he was there. A GP wrote to him in May 2024 to let him know Paul had an unintentional overdose and had spent some time in intensive care. He abandoned his plans to use methadone, but he frequently reported repeated use of crack cocaine and heroin. Paul claimed that the accidental overdose was his lack of intention to end his life.
He moved into his parents’ home to support him while attempting to quit the habit after the overdose. He told a GP in August 2024 that he had “suicidal ideations” but had no intention of acting on them. Because he wasn’t well, he was given psychological care in the community, but he was also asked to be off the job.
He had not checked WhatsApp since she left his flat, according to neighbor Melissa Crooks, who was the last to see him two days before he passed away. Beverley Danan, Paul’s mother, praised her son, saying that Paul had aided so many people from all walks of life but was unable to assist himself in the same way. She continued, “His smiley face and love for life will always stand out in our memories.”
A misadventure was discovered by coroner Debbie Rrooked. She claimed to the Bristol coroner’s court, “Paul did not intend to commit suicide.”
Avon Coroner’s Court in Bristol held an inquest into his death. According to Alexis Camp from the coroner’s office, “Mr. Danan was discovered unresponsive at his home address.” He added, “Emergency services confirmed his sadly passed away. After the post-mortem, samples were taken for analysis. There was no note left.
A court had previously discovered that benzodiazepine use contributed to Danan’s provisional cause of death as a result of the combined toxicity of heroin, methadone, codeine, cocaine, zopiclone, and pregabalin. Assistant Coroner Deborah Rookes presided over the inquest that continued.
Evidence was classified as a read-inquest, which meant that witnesses’ written statements were more than likely to be used as written statements. According to court records, Danan was scheduled to appear at a plea hearing at Warrington Magistrates’ Court the day after his death after being accused of possessing cocaine and marijuana.
He was also accused of driving in Warrington, Cheshire, on October 2 last year while driving while under the influence of drugs. The actor had previously entered rehab in an effort to recover, and he had been open about his addiction struggles.
Danan stated at the time that he hoped the series would give him a “second chance” at his career when he participated in Channel 5’s Celebrity Big Brother in 2017. He resisted requests to make a return to Hollyoaks, and he later co-founded the podcast The Morning After With Paul Danan, which ran from 2019 to 2023.
He launched a drama workshop called Morning After Drama in 2020, which expanded from online classes during the pandemic to workshops in London, Oxford, and the South West. His other appearances included those on The Kevin Bishop Show and on Celebrity Coach Trip on Channel 4 and E4’s Celebrity Coach Trip.
Danan, who claims his addictions started when he was a teenager, discussed them on ITV’s The Jeremy Kyle Show in 2019. He claimed that in order to remain in recovery, he must “work hard every day.”
He admitted to drug and public order offenses in 2010, received a $350 fine, and was then referred to a drug agency for assistance by Stevenage Magistrates’ Court. Paul Danan passed away at the age of 46, according to a statement from Independent Creative Management.
