Rishabh Pant, an Indian wicketkeeper, returned to action on day two of the fourth Test against England, but he will miss the remainder of the match.

Pant, 27, resumed on 37 and recorded a score of 54 in India’s 358 all out after being hit on day one and being unable to walk.

When Shardul Thakur was caught leaving his side with a score of 314-6, he hobbled throughout his innings and struck Jofra Archer over the leg side. He then reappeared in a standing ovation.

After having his off stump removed by Archer, the crowd rose once more when he limped off.

Dhruv Jurel can take the gloves for the duration of the Test thanks to changes to cricket’s laws in 2017, just like he did when Pant injured his finger in the third Test at Lord’s.

Pant was hit on the foot by a delivery from Chris Woakes on the opening night, but India remain oblivious to how serious the injury was.

Although there are still some doubts about his availability for the rest of the series, he might bat once more in India’s second innings.

The flamboyant left-hander, who was one of the series’ players prior to his injury, returned to play in September, almost two years after a car crash that nearly cost him his life.

His series run total increased to 479 with his fifty on day two, his third of the summer, plus centuries in each of the first Test.
