After the former cricket player opened up about their time on Top Gear in a new documentary, Patrick McGuinness revealed that he enjoys laughing every day while working alongside Freddie Flintoff.
Paddy McGuinness has declared his love for Freddie Flintoff as the former Top Gear star said he might find it ‘triggering’ to see him in person. Comedian and TV presenter Paddy, 51, said he still messages his former co-host and is looking forward to watching Freddie’s documentary ‘Flintoff’, which includes detail of the former cricketer’s near-fatal crash in December 2022.
Speaking in the special, Freddie admitted he ‘felt bad’ for not seeing Paddy in two years and wrongly feared he’d derailed his pal’s career when his accident took Top Gear off air. Freddie and Paddy worked closely together on the hit show alongside former racing driver Chris Harris.
Speaking in his Disney+ documentary released on Friday, Freddie says: “I feel bad I haven’t been in more contact with Chris and Paddy. Part of it is for myself a little bit. I hate the word triggering, but I’m worried about that. It’s also something that has stopped, I suppose, in some ways, because of what happened to me. Like their careers have been altered as well. So I feel not guilty, but I feel bad for him.”
Showing his support for pal Freddie, Paddy said: “I love Fred. He’s a good lad. The mad thing about me getting on with him so well is that I know absolutely zero about cricket. I’ve never watched it, never been into it and never played it. I knew of Freddie and Ian Botham and Michael Vaughan… the famous names.” Despite his lack of knowledge on Freddie’s stellar England career, the pair struck up a close bond while filming the BBC motor show.
Paddy recalls Fred and Chris Harris laughing every time we collaborated. Such a lovely experience. As someone who wasn’t well traveled to the locations we visited in Top Gear and venture off the beaten path, this was one of those jobs.
When I consider what a privilege it is to have done that job, it was only when I consider what we did. I’m still messaging Freddie. However, everyone lives busy lives. You work with people and stay in touch with them on every show I do, but not everyone does. It’s like a bottle of lightning bringing everyone together.
With his Nearly There… tour, which wraps up this weekend in Glasgow, Paddy has been performing stand-up for the first time in almost a decade.
I have more life experience to talk about than the last time I played on stage, which I did ten years ago. It’s been a pleasure to return. This one deserves my praise. Although I still struggle with nerves, I completely forget about it once I’m on stage. When there is a good atmosphere and laughter, you act accordingly.
This May, Paddy and Marston’s will host a nationwide pub quiz to identify the most intelligent pub-goers in the UK.
I’m good at a pub quiz, I say. Because of how well my eyes looked in the photo round, they used to refer to me as The Jackal! Although I’m not particularly interested in geography, I have a lot of useless trivia in my possession!
“We want as many people as possible to visit their neighborhood each week to take the quiz. Working with Marston’s, I’m so excited to find the most innovative pub in the country and to help some fantastic community causes. I’m eager to meet the winners and the community projects to personally congratulate them on.
As part of the partnership, the winners of Paddy’s pub quiz will get the chance to win huge prizes and to meet Paddy himself… as well as have bragging rights for being part of the Smartest Pub of the week. The Big Pub Quiz, hosted by Paddy McGuinness, kicks off on Thursday 1st May at 8pm.
