Osun LG Polls: Don’t Truncate Democracy, Makinde Warns APC

The Oyo State governor, ‘ Seyi Makinde, has warned the All Progressives Congress (APC) not to truncate democracy by resorting to self-help on local government administration in Osun State.

The governor warned against doing this on Sunday as the 30 newly elected local government chairmen sworn in in Osun State.

Makinde warned the APC against tampering with democratic processes with federal power.

“Recently, we were in Lagos for the South-West Governors ‘ Forum meeting. We had PDP and APC governors from the South-West in attendance. We banded together to address the issues that are common to us in the interests of our region, and our goal is to have support from the top all the way up because the purpose of government is to provide goods to the people in our various states and zones.

We therefore decided to turn around and issue a warning when things started to escalate in Osun State to the point where lives were lost. We are all history students, and we are aware of the changes that South-West Region experienced that led to the designation of it as “Wild Wild West” in the past.

We simply want to give our citizens the fruits of democracy in peace. So, nobody should resort to self-help. Even if you have a court judgment, there is a process, let the process go through. You can’t say that you want to truncate the process because you have the so-called federal might. This is a federal arrangement”.

The Oyo governor congratulated the newly appointed chairmen and chairpersons of all Osun State’s 30 local government areas.

“Don’t forget the promises you made to the people during your campaign. You have a chance to deliver this message to the populace. My prayer is that with the support of your governor and the state government, you will deliver.

” For some of you, this will be your stepping stone to higher positions, because the reward for hard work is more work. “

On Saturday, February 22, 2025, Governor Adeleke casts his ballot in the local government election in Osun State.

Governor Makinde, who was in Osogbo with the chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors ‘ Forum chairman and governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, said they were in attendance at the swearing-in event in solidarity with the Osun State governor, Ademola Adeleke.

The PDP Governors’ Forum chairman and I made the decision to attend this significant occasion and show our support for the government and Osun State’s citizens, Kinde said.

Conflict dominated the days leading up to the Osun local government elections. While the PDP swept the election, winning all chairmanship seats, the APC has dismissed the exercise.

Due to security and legal concerns, the Osun State government and the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) Lateef Fagbemi had asked the government to refrain from carrying out the exercise.
