Osinbajo Got It Wrong, IBB Not Tinubu’s Tormentor — Onanuga

It is incorrect for former vice president Yemi Osinbajo to refer to Ibrahim Babangida as Tinubu’s tormentor, according to Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy.

During the public presentation of Babangida’s autobiography, “A Journey in Service”, at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja last week, Osinbajo who was the book reviewer, recalled how Tinubu, then a senator, resisted the dissolution of the senate by the military government, following the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election.

He joked that Tinubu, who was then subjected to hostility from the military, including Babangida, was present to pay tribute to one of his oppressors.

But speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Tuesday, Onanuga faulted the statement by Osinbajo, saying that Babangida was an inspiration for Tinubu charting a course in politics.

“I believe the former vice president made a mistake,” he said. I believe that President Tinubu’s daughter, Babangida, was not actually his tormentor; remember that he claimed in his own extempore speech that he believed that Babangida was the man who had given him the idea to enter politics.

When Babangida first arrived, he was discussing “new breed politicians,” Tinubu, like many of them, were technocrats or working in private companies, etc. He was drawn to politics because he was the only one who stepped up. So, he came there to pay homage, “Onanuga said.

Onanuga claimed that General Sani Abacha’s suffering actually started when Tinubu and some of his colleagues attempted to re-convene the Senate in Lagos.
