After Liam Rosenior left the French club for Chelsea, Gary O’Neil has accepted to lead Strasbourg.

O’Neil, 42, hasn’t played for a club since December 2024 when Wolves fired him.

Prior to being fired and replaced by Andoni Iraola, he previously spent a year working for Bournemouth during the 2022-23 season, helping the south coast club avoid relegation.

His appointment at Strasbourg comes inainte of Saturday’s Coupe de France matchup with third-tier Avranches.

Some supporters have expressed frustration at Rosenior’s exit because Strasbourg is owned by the same American organization as Chelsea.

The transfer of Liam Rosenior is yet another humiliating step in Racing’s subservience toward Chelsea, according to Strasbourg Supporters’ Federation in a statement.

We have been trying to raise the alarm about this for two and a half years, along with others.

Beyond the mid-season impact and a young coach’s goals, the issue extends far beyond. The future of French club football is in question, and it is structural.

With more than £100 million in investment in the summer transfer window, with multi-club ownership now a common practice in modern football, Strasbourg president Marc Keller argued in November that owners BlueCo have been beneficial to the club. He cited the stadium’s, women’s team, and academy’s investments.
