After overcoming a battling with Martin Landaluce, Cameron Norrie, the country’s top player, described his first-round victory at the Madrid Open as one of his favorite victories of his career.
Norrie, the 19-year-old Spaniard, won the ATP main-draw first since March by defeating her 6-7 (4-7) 7-5 6-4.
For a while on Thursday, his struggles appeared to be going on, and Norrie, 29, dropped to 91st overall.
After going five games in a row to lose to 3-0 in the opening set, Norrie rallied to win the third set before saving a match point and clinching the victory.
After Landaluce’s wild game ended at 4-4 in the decisive set, the British number three made the most of his experience to win.
Norrie later stated on Sky Sports that while it’s bad timing, I can at least have a day off tomorrow. Hopefully, it will pass quickly.
Perhaps one of my favorite victories, perhaps. I had no energy last night, didn’t sleep at all, and I was feeling absolutely terrible. I wasn’t sure I was going to play.
“I woke up early, feeling very uninspired, and still sleeping on the court.” I had to produce my own energy. I had to fight every single point because he actually played really well, and I know he’s a very good player.
In the second round, Norrie will face Czech Republic’s Jiri Lehecka, who is 26th seed.
After defeating Yunchaokete Bu of China 6-3 7-6 (7-2) in the second round, British number two Jacob Fearnley defeated Norrie later on Thursday.
